Language immersion programs

Language immersion, or also immersion program, is a learning method used in language education for which every single activity a student performs is carried out in a foreign language. The language is therefore not simply taught as a subject to learn, but as a tool for students to communicate, learn and have fun. This means that students are completely immersed in the language they intend to learn and therefore have the maximum exposure to the new idiom. 

This technique is the one by which we all learn our native language in our first years and it has shown to be the most effective.

Yes, language immersion programs are worth it. Not only this type of program speeds up the learning process, but it also enriches the experience for the student. During an immersion program, the student receives practical examples of how to use expressions and words and they are able to memorize their correct use in a shorter time. Additionally, their engagement and commitment in learning the language are stronger as they see results of their effort in the everyday life. They can feel directly the positive effect of speaking a new language. Moreover, they are capable of doing all of this while they live a remarkable experience abroad and have fun.

In the EF language immersion programs, you will be assigned to a class at the beginning of the program. This will be done depending on your initial level of language skills. The immersion program is designed to use the language you want to learn as a tool to discuss and participate in projects so that you learn by doing other activities. Students are engaged in fun and entertaining activities, that make the learning process fast and very effective. 

Generally, during a language immersion, students attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon and they have multiple activities organized by the EF staff to keep learning during the rest of the day. These could be sports, excursions, city tours, and other classes focusing on discovering the culture of the destination that the student has chosen for the language immersion program.

Language immersion programs abroad are available in all EF campuses all around the world. There are immersion programs in about 50 different destinations. 

Some of the most popular are English immersion programs in the USA and French immersion programs in France. Other options are Italian immersion programs in Italy, and German immersion programs in Germany. Additionally, you can also attend Japanese immersion programs in Japan and Korean immersion programs in Korea.

All EF language programs offered are customizable per length, level, and destination. Our languages abroad programs range from 1 week to 52 weeks. If you are committed to achieving fluency, we advise allocating a few months to your language immersion, especially if you start from scratch with a language. With our EF Method, developed by EF in collaboration with leading linguists, testing experts, and academics, we can guarantee that you will advance 1 language level every 6 weeks.
