If you need a Spanish language certificate for your work or studies, you will need to take a paid Spanish exam like the DELE. You can also ask someone who speaks Spanish well to help check your Spanish level, although if they are not a teacher, they will only be able to give you a rough idea.
There are many ways to measure your level in Spanish. The most obvious is to take a Spanish test, but there are several other methods as well. The CEFR is the most common standard for measuring levels in Spanish. It has 6 levels divided into 3 broad bands (A, B, C) from elementary to advanced. At the intermediate level, you can express doubts and concerns, tell stories, and make arguments, especially on familiar subjects. The intermediate level is sufficient for many jobs in Spanish. At the advanced level, you can communicate with ease in Spanish even if the subject is unfamiliar.
The best Spanish exam for you depends on your needs. If you're being asked to prove your Spanish level by an employer or an organization, usually they will specify which exam you need to take. The most frequently-recognized Spanish exams are the DELE, the SIELE, and the CELU. However, none of these exams may be right for you. They all cost money and must be scheduled months in advance. If you aren't required to take a standardized exam. the best Spanish test for you may be one of the free online options.
